Electronic Waste Management in Canada
Most provinces and territories in Canada now have legislation in place that require fees be paid when electronic products are delivered to clients in their jurisdiction; and that it is the responsibility of the reseller to collect those fees and pass them on to the related jurisdiction. In essence the fee is an advanced payment for the proper and environmentally responsible disposal of the product when it has reached the end-of-life status.

Recycling Programs
The purpose of the fees is to fund recycling programs in order to keep the eWaste out of Canada’s landfills and incinerators. Through these recycling programs materials such as:
- Aluminum
- Brass
- Copper
- Glass
- Iron
- Plastic
- Steel
are extracted, shredded, packaged and then resold as raw material to a variety of product manufacturers.
These programs also extract compounds such as lead, cadmium, mercury and PVC plastic that can impact the environment and cause health and safety issues. Such compounds are disposed of in an environmental way that meets regulatory requirements.
